After having read both Dante and Petrarch, it strikes me that they are both highly patriotic and that they are both in exile from their hometown (or in Petrarch's case Italy itself). I decided to find out if exile might be the cause of their somewhat exaggerated patriotism. Here is what I found out:

-this phenomena can be explained by social psychology ---> people tend to have a greater affiliation with and affection towards a group that they have had to work hard or suffer in which to gain entrance. For example, this is why people who rush for fraternities or sororities like and identify with their group despite the hazing they endured.
